TCM’s View on Low AMH & High FSH: A Garden with Depleting Seeds

Imagine you have a beautiful garden that you’ve nurtured with care. However, if the seed supply is running low (Low AMH) or the  gardener is working extra hard to stimulate growth but getting little response (High FSH), it becomes harder to cultivate new life.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Low AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) and High FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) indicate a  decline in reproductive potential, often linked to Kidney Jing (Essence) Deficiency, Blood Deficiency, and Yin Deficiency.

Causes of Low AMH & High FSH in TCM

1.Diminishing Seed Bank: Kidney Jing Deficiency (Declining Egg Reserve)

In our garden, if the seed supply is running low, it becomes harder to grow new plants. In TCM, Kidney Jing (Essence) is the  foundation of fertility, determining the quantity and quality of eggs. As we age, Jing naturally declines, but poor lifestyle habits, stress,  and overwork accelerate depletion.

2.Poor Soil Quality: Blood & Yin Deficiency (Weak Nourishment for Eggs)

Even if there are still seeds left in the garden, they won’t sprout well if the soil lacks nutrients and moisture. In TCM, Blood nourishes  the eggs, while Yin provides the necessary cooling and hydration for ovarian function.

3.Unstable Climate: Liver Qi Stagnation (Hormonal Imbalance)

If the weather in the garden is erratic—stormy one day, dry the next—it disrupts plant growth. Similarly, in TCM, emotional stress and  Liver Qi stagnation cause hormonal imbalances, leading to irregular ovulation and elevated FSH levels.

4.Weak Irrigation System: Poor Blood Circulation to the Ovaries

If water struggles to reach the plants, they won’t grow well. In the body, poor circulation to the ovaries reduces egg quality and  ovarian response to FSH.

TCM Approach for Low AMH & High FSH

1.Rebuild the Seed Bank (Restore Kidney Jing & Core Vitality)

Support egg quality and reserve by replenishing reproductive essence.

• Prioritise deep rest and protect against energy depletion

• Eat warming, essence-building foods to nourish core vitality

• Avoid excessive stimulation, overwork, and sexual overexertion

2.Enrich the Soil (Nourish Blood & Yin for Egg Development)

Improve egg nourishment by restoring fluid and blood quality.

• Eat blood- and yin-nourishing foods like cooked greens, black sesame, stewed fruits

• Avoid dehydration, burnout, and dryness—emotional or physical

• Maintain regular sleep and gentle routines to preserve internal resources

3.Soothe the Climate (Free Liver Qi & Balance Hormones)

Regulate hormonal rhythms by improving emotional flow and Liver Qi movement.

• Practice daily movement (yoga, walking, tai chi) to release stagnation

• Journal or talk to express emotions and reduce internal tension

• Create calm in your environment—less chaos, more rhythm

4.Strengthen the Irrigation System (Boost Blood Flow to the Ovaries)

Enhance ovarian nourishment by improving pelvic circulation.

• Move daily to stimulate lower abdominal blood flow

• Avoid long periods of sitting or tight clothing restricting pelvic area

• Keep the lower body warm, especially during and after ovulation
