TCM’s View on Fibroids: A Stone in the Garden’s Soil

Imagine you have carefully prepared a fertile garden to plant a precious seed, but as you dig into the soil, you find hard stones  buried beneath. These stones make it difficult for the roots to grow freely, blocking the plant’s access to nutrients and space. In  Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), uterine fibroids are like these unwanted stones in the womb, creating obstacles to fertility,  menstrual health, and overall well-being.

In TCM, fibroids are seen as a result of Qi stagnation, Blood stasis, Phlegm accumulation, or Cold Dampness—all of which  contribute to the formation of hardened masses in the uterus.

What Causes These “Stones” (Fibroids in TCM)?

1.Poor Circulation = Qi & Blood Stagnation (Blocked Flow in the Garden)

If a garden’s water system is clogged, water becomes stagnant, and mud or debris accumulates, forming lumps in the soil. Similarly,  when Qi (vital energy) and Blood do not flow smoothly, stagnant Blood can clump together, forming fibroids.

2.Excess Dampness & Phlegm = Heavy, Sticky Soil (Toxic Build-up in the Earth)

If the soil is too wet and sticky, it becomes dense, heavy, and prone to forming clumps. In TCM, excessive Dampness and Phlegm  create stagnation and accumulation, leading to fibroid formation.

3.Cold Uterus = Frozen, Unbreakable Ground (Hardened Soil Preventing Growth)

If the earth is too cold and frozen, it hardens and stops nutrients from reaching the roots. Similarly, in TCM, a Cold Uterus restricts  the flow of Qi and Blood, creating an environment where fibroids can grow.

4.Emotional Stress = Tension in the Garden (Compressed Soil Blocking Growth)

Imagine a gardener pressing down too hard on the soil—this compacts the earth, preventing air, water, and roots from spreading. In  TCM, chronic stress and emotional stagnation (Liver Qi Stagnation) can lead to fibroid formation by blocking the natural flow of Qi  and Blood.

How to Remove the “Stones”?

1.Restore the Flow (Move Qi & Blood to Unblock the Garden)

Reduce fibroid growth and relieve pressure by improving circulation.

• Engage in regular, moderate movement to promote pelvic blood flow

• Apply warmth to the lower abdomen to relax congestion and release stagnation

• Avoid prolonged sitting or stagnation in routine—keep energy flowing daily

2.Dry the Soil (Clear Dampness & Transform Phlegm)

Detox the reproductive system and reduce mass formation by clearing internal dampness.

• Eat light, warm, and clean foods—avoid dairy, greasy meals, and excess sweets

• Strengthen digestion with regular meal times and warm herbal teas

• Support gentle detox through movement, sweating, and healthy digestion

3.Warm the Earth (Dispel Cold & Soften the Uterus)

Break down fibroid resistance by warming and softening cold, hardened tissues.

• Keep the womb warm—use hot packs and dress warmly, especially around menstruation

• Avoid cold/raw foods and drinks that chill the uterus

• Focus on warming routines like warm baths, moxibustion, or herbal infusions

4.Loosen the Soil (Soothe Emotional Stress & Relax the Body)

Ease internal compression and hormonal disruption by calming the mind and body.

• Incorporate relaxation practices like breath-work, journaling, or nature time

• Allow emotional expression—avoid bottling up frustration or resentment

• Balance your schedule to reduce overwhelm and restore inner rhythm
